2019 has been another amazing year for GlobalSurg– below is a look back at just some of the highlights

GlobalSurg 3 data entry finalised

The first few months of 2019 saw the final data entry stages of GlobalSurg 3. Primary data entry closed, data validation was completed and the hospital level survey conducted.

This was the culmination of over a year of data collection and entry by thousands of GlobalSurg collaborators all around the world.

The final number of patients for inclusion in the analysis is 15,973, with only 1% missing 30 day mortality outcome data. 429 hospitals in 82 countries took part in the study helping to make GS3 a truly unique dataset on surgical outcomes for cancer patients.

As 2019 draws to a close, the data analysis is completed and manuscript preparation is underway – 2020 promises to herald multiple publications from what is our most ambitious and successful project to date.

Launch of the GlobalSurg Podcast

Ever keen to keep up with the latest technology and communication tools, in February the GlobalSurg team launched into the world of Podcasting. We bought some microphones, added a jingle, and started recording! Our first attempted was binned, but after that we got the hang of the format and the equipment!

Our informal discussions on aspects of GS3, data validation and use of the WHO checklist have now been listened to over 500 times!

Gap Minder Foundation Collaboration

May saw the beginning of an exciting new collaboration between GlobalSurg and the Gap Minder Foundation.

Gap Minder are striving to provide a fact-based view of the world (for free) and we’re excited to be working with them as part of their Dollar Street initiative. Photographs taken for the GlobalSurg 3 Hospital Level Survey will form the basis of a new aspect of Dollar Street showing healthcare facilities around the world.

New GlobalSurg publications in 2019

Although the primary analyses for both GlobalSurg 1 and 2 were published some time ago, we are continuing to analyse aspects of both datasets, including combining the data from both studies to increase the power of the analysis.

New publications including collaborators from both GlobalSurg 1 & 2 came out in 2019, a full list of which can be found on our publications page.

GlobalSurg collaboration with the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery

GlobalSurg is a key partner in the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU), aiming to improve surgical outcomes for patients in low and middle income countries (LMIC).

Founded in the GlobalSurg network, the GSU has now established research hubs in 6 LMIC – Mexico, South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda, Nigeria and India.

These hubs are going from strength to strength leading clinical trials within their countries.

2019 saw the launch of the CRANE and EAGLE trials, whilst the end of year saw the FALCON trial celebrate 1 year of recruitment, having randomised 1800 patients at 28 hospitals in 6 countries.

We ended 2019 with a visit to the hub in Ghana for the NIHR GSU Annual Research Prioritisation meeting. We spent three days in Accra, updating our partners on trial progress, prioritsing international emergency surgery guidelines and providing training to local collaborators.

We then headed north to visit the home of the NIHR hub in Tamale. Whilst there we met collaborators from the spoke hospitals, launched a Data Centre for data driven research in Ghana, as well as providing generic research skills training courses.

GlobalSurg in 2020

Now that GlobalSurg 3 has completed data collection, we’re sure many of you are wondering what, and when, GlobalSurg 4 will be………

The details are still being finalised, but we are planning a study based on the Global Burden of Post-Operative Deaths (GloPOD) paper that was published in February this year. This ground breaking study, published in The Lancet, attempted to estimate, for the first time, how many people die globally within 30 days of surgery.

Now we plan to we use the power of the GlobalSurg network to collect the data to prove this. In our most ambitious study yet, we hope to capture data on every operation performed worldwide in a single dedicated one-week period. Not just GlobalSurg 4, but GlobalSurg 24:7.
