Professor Dion Morton, Aneel Bhangu, Sohini Chakorbortee, Laura Magill and Dmitri Nepogodiev from the University of Birmingham visited the Ghana Hub of the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery from 25 Feb to 01 March 2019.

Hosted by the Hub lead – Professor Stephen Tabiri – the team had high level meetings in Accra at the Ghanaian College of Physicians and Surgeons and at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital – a leading referral hospital. The delegation then travelled to Tamale in the north of the country where they visited the University of Development Studies (UDS) and Tamale Teaching Hospital. They inaugurated the Hub at UDS and training of Hub personnel was undertaken.

There was great exchange of knowledge about research set-up and delivery. Over 40 staff including consultants, junior surgeons, trainees and nurses from six potential partner Hospitals across Ghana attended the Site Initiation training for the FALCON randomised trial. This was extremely well received.

Work was undertaken for the Access to Surgery research stream and plans were initiated for the Annual Prioritisation meeting which is to be held in Ghana in November 2019. We look forward to going back to Ghana for that.
