One of the main events of 2017 for GlobalSurg has been the establishment of the NIHR Global Health Unit on Global Surgery.
Led by consortium partners, The Universities of Birmingham, Edinburgh and Warwick, the unit will act as a virtual home for the GlobalSurg network and provide substantial funding to establish research hubs around the world.
Each hub will contribute to research prioritisation setting, recruit patients into international clinical trials and contribute data to GlobalSurg international cohort studies. The additional funding will also allow GlobalSurg to provide research training and education in order to build local research capacity and infrastructure.
In November 2017, first hub to open at The University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, hosted the 2nd GlobalSurg Prioritisation Workshop in Johannesburg.
Over 70 International surgeons, researchers and policy makers attended the meeting to discuss and plan future research studies in Access to Surgery, Perioperative Care and Cancer.
