GlobalSurg Cohort Studies

GlobalSurg cohort studies are open to any hospital, anywhere in the world. Teams of data collaborators collect data on their own patients for a defined period, usually 2 or 4 weeks, within the study time frame, and enter it into our secure, online databases. All contributors are named as authors on all publications arising from the study. Read more about the GlobalSurg Collaborative here.

Through three international cohort studies, GlobalSurg collaborators have collected data on >40,000 patients in more than 80 countries examining outcomes after emergency abdominal surgery (GlobalSurg 1), surgical site infection rates (GlobalSurg 2) and outcomes after surgery for breast, gastric and colon cancer patients (GlobalSurg 3).

Results from GlobalSurg cohort studies provide early evidence for development into randomised controlled trials at the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery.

NIHR GSU International Clinical Trials

Changing practice and improving outcomes for surgical patients requires the highest quality evidence demonstrating a new treatment or intervention is effective. International, multi-centre randomised controlled trials are a key tool in generating this evidence.

Clinical trials are highly complex and regulated and are therefore being conducted only in the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU) hub countries. Each hub recruits patients into the trials and works with other hospitals within their country to ensure a good mix of participating centres from tertiary referral units through to rural community hospitals in remote settings.

You can find out more about the structures and processes of the NIHR GSU, including details on each hub country, here.

If your hospital is in an NIHR GSU hub country and you would be interested in taking part in a GSU clinical trial, please contact us via our contact form.
